Positive Aspects of Atheism
- Atheism embraces human reason and its capacity to understand the natural world. It is person centered and promotes humanism.
- Atheism asserts that the physical universe of experienced objects and events is real and is the only one.
- Atheism asserts that the universe is governed by consistent natural laws without exception. It is a scientific worldview.
- Atheism promotes rational morality. Morality is a function of the social interactions of people and a rational person can better determine what relationships are to be valued and what modes of behaviour are preferable, than can adherence to the dictates of ancient authoritarian commandments.
- Rational morality is strengthening and liberating, it is not based on fear of punishment or hope of reward. It allows for judgment based on time and circumstance.
- Rational morality promotes personal responsibility. It recognizes its origins in natural empathic feelings and its manifestation in the logical notion of reciprocity.
- Atheism helped to develop and maintain the core values of modern civilization. Ideals such as human freedom of action, tolerance, equality, and the value of independent thought are the outcomes of the liberation from tyranny.
- Atheism is skeptical of unsubstantiated assertions and encourages critical thinking and inquiry.
